Six years ago, co founders Terrence and Kevin were holding a split DTP/Editorial position within a company that published the only printed Dutch Flight Simulator magazine up until this day. At that time, Terrence was also dating this hot, 5 foot 9 tall, blond, who wasn't exactly the shiniest penny in the roll, but well... one should not underestimate the sheer jedi-mindtrick voodoo powers hot, tall blondes posses. Anywizzle, to pay for her tuition and get her thru college, she worked part-time at McDonalds and required by company policy she had to wear this cool (at least, that was what WE thought) retro/vintage b-boy cap.
We asked her to 'borrow a couple of them' and soon adopted the cap as our 'standard issued gear'. The cap and us became inseparable. Working in the editorial world, meant dealing with strict, harsh deadlines, which were hardly ever kept by the editors that delivered us the content, meaning we were the only ones actually suffering. So right before each deadline, we would lock ourselves in, with enough food, coffee and cigarettes, not to submerge again, until we got the job done, sometimes not sleeping except for an occasional one hour power nap. The cap, almost pulled over our ears made us focus on only that, that was important : the screen in front of us.
We always got the job done. Because of the lack of fresh air and sleep we decided that it was not us that got the job done, but the cap and we soon dubbed it McPet (pet meaning cap in Dutch). Since we figured we were the illest, baddest, phatest, coolest hardcore designers alive (being able to deliver a 70 page layout in a mere 48 hours), but it still were the hidden superman powers of the cap that pulled it of, McPet soon became McPhat. Phat sounding like pet, which means cap, but also sounding like 'vet', which means cool in Dutch slang.
McPhat Studios was born...
